The Gulf Coast Basin of the United States has been and remains one of the premier hydrocarbon basins in the world. As of 2014, there has been cumulative production from the U.S. Gulf Coast Basin of 17.9 billion barrels of oil and 171 trillion cubic feet of gas. The United States Geological Survey estimates 34 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BBOE) yet to be discovered in the Gulf Coast Basin. Estimates do not include coal bed gas, shale gas or resource plays.
